Africa’s Tourism Boom: 74 Million Visitors in 2024 – Driving Jobs & Economic Growth

We are thrilled to announce that our latest press release on Africa’s growing tourism sector has been featured in top travel trade magazines in Germany and Switzerland, including TRVL Counter and Travel Inside. This recognition underscores Africa’s rising popularity as a global travel destination and its role as a key driver of economic growth and job creation.

Africa`s Tourism Boom – Africa’s Tourism Industry Sees Record Growth in 2024

According to the UN World Tourism Barometer, Africa welcomed 74 million international visitors in 2024, reflecting a 7% increase compared to 2019 and 12% more than in 2023. North Africa led the way with a 22% surge in arrivals, while Ethiopia and Morocco stood out, achieving 40% and 35% growth, respectively, in international tourist arrivals compared to 2019.

Tourism as an Economic Engine: Creating Jobs & Boosting Local Economies

Tourism is a major economic driver in Africa, particularly in rural areas. Studies show that one in five tourists creates a new job, benefiting local guides, hotel staff, artisans, and transportation providers. Additionally, the economic impact of tourism extends to other sectors like agriculture, construction, and infrastructure development, fostering sustainable growth.

Luxury & Sustainable Travel: Growing Demand in the DACH Market

The DACH market (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) is an essential source of high-spending tourists. To maintain this momentum, customized and immersive travel experiences are key. Hanna Kleber, CEO of Voice4Africa, highlights:
„To attract luxury travelers from the DACH region, we need authentic, sustainable tourism experiences that not only create unforgettable moments but also support local communities and preserve Africa’s cultural and natural heritage.“

The Future of African Tourism: $168 Billion Opportunity

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, Africa’s tourism industry could contribute over $168 billion to the economy and create more than 18 million jobs over the next decade. However, achieving this requires investment in infrastructure and tourism development.

Hanna Kleber sees this as a huge opportunity for European investors:
„With the U.S. and China taking a more cautious investment approach, Africa presents an open opportunity for European capital. Now is the time to invest in Africa’s tourism sector and build sustainable economic partnerships that drive long-term growth.“
