Growth instead of crisis mode: Central airports in Africa record increasing tourist arrivals and better connectivity
Frankfurt, 09. August 2023. Established tourism centers on the African continent are on a growth course after the pandemic-related crisis seems to have been overcome in many places.
In the first half of 2023, tourist arrivals at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) exceeded the level before the pandemic. According to the West Cape Wesgro Economic Development Authority, the airport recorded 446,703 tourist arrivals between January and June, which corresponds to a recovery of 103 percent compared to the first half of 2019. 90 percent of arrivals came from overseas, 10 percent from other African countries.
Ethiopia as an important hub for intra-African flight connections has also recovered well. According to the IATA connectivity index, regional connectivity within Africa is 113 percent of the pre-crisis level.
According to IATA, passenger traffic in Africa is expected to double to more than 300 million air passengers by 2040. East, Central and West Africa will make a growing contribution to overall traffic growth on the continent.
Based on current figures from the UNWTO, tourist arrivals throughout Africa have reached around 88 percent of the pre-crisis level.
„The increasing number of passengers at central African airports coincides with the growing demand for African travel from our tour operator partners and is good news for the local people who can finally look positively into the future after the crisis and rely on important jobs in the travel industry,“ explains Hanna Kleber, initiator of Voice4Africa.
