Travel to Africa Possible Despite Mpox Outbreak
„Travel to Africa is still possible and extensive safety and precautionary measures are being taken in African destinations to prevent the virus from gaining a foothold,“ explains Hanna Kleber from the Voice4Africa initiative, which provides transparent information for travelers interested in Africa and brings together medium-sized Africa tour operators from the DACH region.
According to the WHO, 12 African countries have reported 3,562 confirmed MPox cases in 2024 (as of August 18). The three countries with the most cases in 2024 are the Democratic Republic of Congo (3,235), Burundi (153) and the Central African Republic (45).
A current overview of all affected countries can be found on the World Health Organization website.
* Mpox used to be called monkeypox. However, the WHO has renamed the name to the neutral term Mpox.
