Ubuntu Women Tourism Foundation on the UN International Day of the Girl Child

On this International Day of the Girl Child, we reflect on the inspiring journey of Hilda Namara, the founder of the Ubuntu Women Tourism Foundation in Western Uganda. Growing up in a village with her single mother, who struggled to raise seven children after losing her husband, Hilda witnessed firsthand the challenges that women face in her community. This experience ignited a passion for women’s protection and empowerment, driving her to create a foundation that serves as a voice for women and youth, giving them hope for a positive future.

The Foundation’s Mission

Based in Mbarara District of rural Uganda, the Ubuntu Women Tourism Foundation is a non-profit, women-led initiative committed to community-based tourism. Hilda and her team work tirelessly to provide skill-building opportunities in arts and crafts, promote the rich Ankole culture, and foster environmental conservation. By hosting both foreign and national tourists, they aim to address the socio-economic challenges that women and youth face in their region.

Hilda’s vision extends beyond tourism; it encompasses empowerment through education and community involvement. The foundation offers free training in various crafts, allowing young women to develop skills in tailoring and basket-making. By providing a safe and supportive space for learning, they enable these young artisans to create products that can be sold, allowing them to earn an income and gain financial independence.

Community Engagement and Cultural Preservation

Cultural preservation is at the heart of the Ubuntu Women Tourism Foundation. Hilda believes that by celebrating and sharing their heritage, women and youth can gain economic empowerment. Through community experiences, participants learn about traditional songs and dances, local food preparation, and even engage in activities like milking Ankole long-horned cows. These experiences not only empower local women economically but also enhance the community’s cultural identity.

The foundation also addresses pressing environmental issues, encouraging community members to plant trees to combat the effects of global warming. By focusing on sustainable practices, the foundation hopes to cultivate a sense of responsibility towards the environment and future generations.

Overcoming Challenges

While the foundation has made significant strides, it faces challenges typical of start-up organizations. Limited resources hinder their ability to reach more women and youth, and cultural barriers sometimes restrict participation. Hilda’s team is also working against seasonal fluctuations in tourism, which can affect their income and outreach capabilities. Despite these hurdles, Hilda remains hopeful and committed to her mission.
