UN Tourism data reveals strong potential for premium travel strategies in Africa
Frankfurt, May 7, 2025 – New numbers from UN Tourism show a clear trend: African countries earn more when they focus on quality, not quantity. The key to success is not the number of tourists, but how much each one spends. That’s why high-end tourism in Africa offers such strong benefits.
Let’s look at the data. The Seychelles rank 4th in the world with $2,796 in revenue per tourist. Tanzania is 12th with $1,707, and Mauritius also does well with $1,459. In contrast, countries like South Africa ($722), Morocco ($652), and Tunisia ($275) earn far less per visitor, even with more tourists.
Quality Brings Higher Returns
These numbers show something important: high-end tourism in Africa earns more money with fewer visitors. Countries that offer premium travel—like Seychelles or Barbados—see greater value per guest. Mass tourism spots like France ($756) or Spain ($1,136) attract millions, but the income per person is lower.
A Big Opportunity for Africa
“Countries like Angola can build a premium tourism sector from the start,” says Hanna Kleber, Chair of Voice4Africa. “High-end tourism in Africa means more income and more sustainability—socially and environmentally.”
To succeed, countries should invest in luxury lodges, trained staff, and unique experiences. Travelers today want comfort, nature, culture, and meaning—not crowds.
Tourism Revenue per Tourist – UN Ranking 2024 (USD):
-
$5,000+: Only Australia ($6,264)
-
$2,000–$4,999: 6 countries (including Seychelles)
-
$1,000–$1,999: 30 countries (including Tanzania and Mauritius)
-
Below $1,000: 22 countries (including South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia)
Conclusion: Africa Wins with High-End Travel
Africa needs more tourists, but the right ones. With high-end tourism in Africa, countries can earn more, protect their environment, and support their people. It’s a smart and sustainable path forward.
