Restoring Zambia`s Katanino Forest
Before 2019, families living around the Katanino Forest Reserve were cutting down trees to produce charcoal and selling it to nearby cities in Zambia’s Copperbelt province.
That same year, forest and landscape restoration NGO WeForest started working with the Zambian Forestry Department and these same local families to restore the reserve. Five years later, hundreds of hectares of degraded forest have regrown.
The project has led to increased sightings of birds, reptiles, and mammals, including near-threatened African crowned eagles, southern ground hornbills, gaboon vipers, small antelope, side-striped jackals, and spotted hyenas.
To ensure sustainable income alternatives to charcoal production for the families living around the reserve, WeForest is promoting conservation agriculture, forest-friendly goat rearing, and agroforestry. More than 700 farmers in the buffer zone are now keeping bees, reducing tree loss on their plots.
