Travel tips for Lesotho
Top 5 Experiences
Lesotho’s charm lies in its untouched mountain landscapes, cultural richness, and the warmth of its people, making it a unique destination for travellers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience combined with a holiday in South Africa. Highlights include:

Sani Pass and Drakensberg Mountains
Lesotho boasts the spectacular Sani Pass, a winding mountain road that connects South Africa to Lesotho. The journey through this pass offers breathtaking views of the Drakensberg Mountains and the surrounding landscapes. Once at the top, enjoy a drink in the “highest pub in Africa”.

Maletsunyane Falls
Maletsunyane Falls is one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Southern Africa, cascading down a dramatic 192 meters. The surrounding gorge and natural beauty make it a must-visit destination. Adventurous travellers can also try the world’s longest commercially operated single-drop abseil, descending beside the waterfall for an adrenaline-pumping experience.

Thaba-Bosiu National Monument
Thaba-Bosiu holds historical and cultural significance as the mountain fortress that served as the residence of King Moshoeshoe I, the founder of Lesotho. The site provides insights into the rich history of the Basotho people and their resistance against various invaders. The panoramic views from the top are not only historically meaningful but also visually stunning.

Pony Trekking in the Maluti Mountains
Lesotho is renowned for its rugged terrain, and one of the best ways to explore it is on the back of a sturdy Basotho pony. Guided pony treks take visitors through remote villages, picturesque landscapes, and high mountain passes. This experience provides a unique insight into the local way of life and offers unparalleled views of Lesotho’s natural beauty.

Afriski Mountain Resort
For those seeking a combination of adventure and relaxation, Afriski Mountain Resort is a winter wonderland for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts. Located in the Maluti Mountains, this resort transforms into a playground for outdoor activities during the warmer months, offering mountain biking, hiking, and a vibrant atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.
Tourist Infrastructure
Most visitors enter Lesotho via its neighbouring state South Africa. Transportation within Lesotho can include road travel, as well as air travel to and from neighbouring countries. Roads may vary in quality, with some areas requiring 4×4 vehicles, especially in more remote regions. Public transportation options include buses and shared taxis. Lesotho is accessible by air through Moshoeshoe I International Airport in Maseru.
Lesotho offers a range of accommodations, including hotels, lodges, guesthouses, and bed-and-breakfast establishments. The capital, Maseru, has several hotels catering to different budget ranges. In more rural areas, accommodations may be simpler, reflecting the country’s natural and traditional settings.
Climate and Travel Season
Lesotho has a climate that is largely influenced by its high elevation and mountainous terrain. The country experiences four distinct seasons.
The best time to visit Lesotho depends on the type of experience one seeks: Summer (December to February) is ideal for outdoor activities and enjoying the warmer temperatures. Autumn (March to May) is a pleasant time to visit with mild temperatures and potentially colourful landscapes. Winter (June to August) is good for those who enjoy winter sports, as well as for travellers who prefer cooler weather. Spring (September to November) is another pleasant period with milder temperatures and the beauty of spring blooms.
Lesotho’s high-altitude areas may experience unpredictable weather, and conditions can vary depending on the specific region and altitude. It is advisable to check weather forecasts closer to travel dates and pack accordingly, especially if planning to engage in outdoor activities.
